The Pros and Cons of Cellulite Laser Surgery
Cellulite is the name given to that dimpled skin look that is so upsetting to most women. It is caused by the movement of fat cells from their normal location beneath the skin to a location in the middle of the dermal layer. The exact reason why this happens is unclear, but the condition is not necessarily associated with being overweight. The problem is not that there is too much fat tissue, but that it is not where it should be.
One new treatment for the condition is Cellulite Laser Surgery. Surgery is a bit of a misnomer here, as the treatment involves the use of heat, narrow beam laser light, and massage to dissolve the fat cells, and smooth them out. Here is a quick look at the pros and cons of this new procedure.
-----Pros-----
- Cellulite Laser Surgery is not actually surgery. It is a totally non-invasion treatment that involves none of the risks associated with surgery, and requires no lost time for recovery.
- It seems to work. Test results on the procedure are very encouraging. A recent study showed that 83% of those tested showed marked improvement in appearance after the treatment. This was by far the highest mark among all of the various cellulite treatments.
- The treatment can be administered by technicians and does not require a medical doctor. This not only makes it less expensive, but increases the number of clinics that offer it, making it more readily available.
-----Cons-----
- It is not a cure. The problem with cellulite in the first place is that it is a natural occurrence that happens to be unpopular for cosmetic reasons. In most studies, although the condition improved markedly with the laser and massage therapy, the condition tended to return.
- Expense is a concern. In order to be truly effective, the procedure must be repeated several times. It will also need to be done periodically as the condition will most likely reappear. The treatments are not inexpensive, and most insurance policies will not cover them as they are purely for cosmetic purposes.
